Field-testing for empirical validation involved web-based administration of 52 shuffled items from both test forms to 24 CA-1s, 21 CA-2s, 2 fellows, 1 attending anesthesiologist, and 1 of unknown rank at 3 US medical schools. Items from each form yielded near-normal score distributions, with similar medians, ranges, and standard deviations.

Management of preoperative anemia has become a goal for the anesthesiologist before surgery, with some recommendations endorsing anemia treatment in patients undergoing surgery [16,17]. Patient blood management (PBM), as defined by the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management, is the timely application of evidence-based medical and surgical concepts designed to maintain hemoglobin concentrations, optimize hemostasis, and minimize blood loss in an effort to improve patient outcomes [18].

Several tools have been developed to predict postoperative mortality, including the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) risk calculator, the American Society of Anesthesiologist Physical Status (ASAPS), the risk quantification index, the risk stratification index, and the preoperative score [2-5].
