About the Journal
Focus and Scope
JMIR Medical Informatics (JMI, ISSN 2291-9694; editor-in-chief: Arriel Benis, PhD, FIAHSI, SMIEEE) is an open-access journal that focuses on the challenges and impacts of clinical informatics, digitalization of care processes, and clinical and health data pipelines from acquisition to reuse, including semantics, natural language processing, natural interactions, meaningful analytics and decision support, electronic health records, infrastructures, implementation, and evaluation. The journal prioritizes research that bridges theoretical frameworks with actionable insights, ensuring that informatics solutions demonstrate measurable clinical or population impact.
JMIR Medical Informatics focuses on applied, translational research and implementation science. Submissions that advance data shareability, reusability, and interoperability within real-world health systems are welcome. The journal also features implementation reports (since 2022) that systematically describe the translation of informatics solutions into routine clinical environments.
AI-oriented submissions (machine learning, deep learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, image processing) must demonstrate utility beyond algorithmic performance on static datasets. Studies should exhibit clinical applicability and maturity, such as integration into care workflows, deployment in routine practice, or robust external validation, with meaningful documented outcomes for patients or clinicians.
