For this purpose, a multitude of tools for feasibility queries exist (eg, i2b2 [13,15], Tri Net X [16], tran SMART [17], Sample Locator [18-20], Observational Health Data Science and Informatics [OHDSI] ATLAS [21], DZHK Feasibility Explorer [22]), each with its own data formats, standards, and query languages, including Structured Query Language (SQL), Clinical Quality Language (CQL), FHIR-Search, and Archetype Query Language (AQL).

Generation of a Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)-based Ontology for Federated Feasibility Queries in the Context of COVID-19: Feasibility Study

FHIR Resources can be requested using FHIR Search or CQL. FHIR Search uses GET requests to obtain Resources from an FHIR server. All Resources define a set of search parameters that can be used to filter the search result. FHIR Search has limitations in its expressiveness. It requires defined search parameters and cannot express inclusion and exclusion criteria in a single query [15].
