Announcing an Updated Focus and Scope for JMIR Medical Informatics

JMIR Medical Informatics has updated its focus and scope to align with the rapid acceleration of technological advancements in medical informatics. As biomedical and health informatics has evolved, so has the process and production of research and publications. These updates address persistent and novel challenges in the field, ensuring that published literature maintains a strong focus on high-quality research with rigorously conducted applications. This shift matters because informatics solutions must move beyond theoretical frameworks and technical novelty to deliver tangible, real-world benefits for health systems, care delivery, and patient outcomes.

While the core identity of the journal remains unchanged, submitted work will be evaluated against a stronger criterion for translational impact. The journal explicitly prioritizes research that bridges theoretical frameworks with actionable insights. Artificial intelligence-oriented submissions (machine learning, deep learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, image processing) must now demonstrate clinical applicability, such as workflow integration or external validation, rather than relying solely on performance on static datasets. The journal also continues to welcome implementation reports that systematically detail how informatics solutions are translated into routine clinical environments.
