US Public Interest in Merkel Cell Carcinoma Following Jimmy Buffett’s Death and Implications for Continued Health Advocacy: Infodemiology Study of Google Trends

US Public Interest in Merkel Cell Carcinoma Following Jimmy Buffett’s Death and Implications for Continued Health Advocacy: Infodemiology Study of Google Trends

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who famously sang “Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way,” tragically died on September 1, 2023, after battling lymphoma precipitating from Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) [7,8]. Buffett’s death received widespread media coverage, prompting renewed interest in this rare disease among the general public [9].

Deep Learning–Based Identification of Tissue of Origin for Carcinomas of Unknown Primary Using MicroRNA Expression: Algorithm Development and Validation

Deep Learning–Based Identification of Tissue of Origin for Carcinomas of Unknown Primary Using MicroRNA Expression: Algorithm Development and Validation

Carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP) originates when a patient presents at diagnosis with malignant disease across the body; yet, the cancer cells tissue of origin (TOO) remains unidentifiable. Thus, CUP is a unique subset of metastasized cancer representing an advanced stage in which cancer has gained the ability to thrive in new tissue sites and has spread from the primary tumor site. In the United States, an estimated 31,490 people were diagnosed with cases of cancer of unknown TOO in 2008.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma on the Face: Case Report

Merkel Cell Carcinoma on the Face: Case Report

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare primary neuroendocrine skin tumor [1] that usually presents as a flesh-colored or bluish-red nodule on the face, neck, or head [2]. It primarily affects White men older than 65 years and immunocompromised people [3]. Long-term ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure and Merkel cell polyomavirus are associated with MCC pathogenesis. MCC patients often appear with a quickly developing, painless, hard, glossy, flesh-colored, or bluish-red intracutaneous nodule [4].

The Importance of Basal Cell Carcinoma Risk Stratification and Potential Future Pathways

The Importance of Basal Cell Carcinoma Risk Stratification and Potential Future Pathways

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in humans, with the estimated incidence having risen by 20% and 80% over the past 30 years. As a result, it is expected that 1 in 5 Americans may develop BCC in their lifetime [1]. Mutagenesis of p53 appears preferentially in the aggressive variants of BCC, and BCC in sun-exposed and sun-protected sites seem to have different biology and morphology [2].

Data-Efficient Computational Pathology Platform for Faster and Cheaper Breast Cancer Subtype Identifications: Development of a Deep Learning Model

Data-Efficient Computational Pathology Platform for Faster and Cheaper Breast Cancer Subtype Identifications: Development of a Deep Learning Model

We retrospectively examined 401 cases of patients with primary breast carcinoma diagnosed between 2018 and 2020 at the Department of Pathology, National Cancer Center, South Korea. Pathological diagnoses of the specimens were performed by a breast pathologist following the World Health Organization guidelines and the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging manual (8th edition).

Cause of Death in Patients with Oropharyngeal Carcinoma by Human Papillomavirus Status: Comparative Data Analysis

Cause of Death in Patients with Oropharyngeal Carcinoma by Human Papillomavirus Status: Comparative Data Analysis

Like other types of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has been historically associated with alcohol and tobacco consumption. However, infection with carcinogenic HPV infection has emerged as an important risk factor that has driven an increase in the incidence of OPSCC. In recent decades, OPSCC has been one of the malignant tumors with rapidly rising incidences in Western countries [2-5].

The Global Prevalence of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and its Association With Cancers: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The Global Prevalence of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and its Association With Cancers: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has a global prevalence of 25% and is a leading cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma [1]. NAFLD encompasses a disease continuum from steatosis with or without mild inflammation (nonalcoholic fatty liver; NAFL) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is characterized by necroinflammation and faster fibrosis progression than nonalcoholic fatty liver.
