Patients that showed evidence of moderate to severe depression, defined by a Geriatric Depression Scale score of 9 or above [30], were excluded. This is to avoid including reversible causes of dementia, which may have poorly correlated impacts on cognitive and functional measures. Given that depression is common among patients with dementia [31-33], patients with mild depression were not excluded to avoid overfiltering of the data.
