Huang et al [33] conducted a study on vancomycin dose prediction using the XGB technique, in which composite variables incorporating low hematocrit and elevated creatinine concentrations exhibited high feature importance. There is minimal biological plausibility for hematocrit in the dose prediction model. One possible explanation is that it may serve as a surrogate for the volume of distribution, which is significantly increased in critically ill patients.
